IN the competitive world of sports journalism, where stories come alive with every game and every goal, Elton Lonaratha Jnr has carved a place for himself. His journey from humble beginnings to being named Sports Journalist of the Year in 2024 is a tale of determination, passion, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
Early Beginnings and Education
Elton’s journey began in the classrooms of Solomon Islands National University (SINU) in 2019, where his passion for storytelling found a direction in Media Journalism. His academic journey was influenced by his strong performance in English during his primary and high school years. However, a significant decision marked his path when he chose to leave the University of the South Pacific (USP) to complete his studies at SINU. “I realized that my time at USP would be prolonged, so I decided to earn a job to help my parents, who were both without a job,” he reflects.
Stepping into Journalism
In 2020, Elton began his career as a cadet journalist at Island Sun, guided by the mentorship of Editor Priestley Habru and the late Publisher and Director Mathias Loji. His transition from a general reporter to a dedicated sports reporter in 2021 marked a pivotal moment in his career. Under the guidance of sports editors like Martin Taromane Maka’a, Ofani Eremae, Charles Kadamana, and Sub-editors Brian Lezutuni and Irwin Angiki, Elton honed his skills and developed a deep passion for sports journalism.
Growth and Mentorship
Elton’s time as a sports reporter was characterized by continuous learning and improvement. He engaged in regular conversations with colleagues, asking numerous questions to enhance his capacity. Close interactions with respected sports journalists and colleagues like the late Simon Abana, Philip Lilomo, Pita Zoleveke, and Eddie Osifelo significantly shaped his approach to journalism. “My passion for sports journalism was shaped by learning from esteemed colleagues like Simon Abana and Philip Lilomo,” he recalls.

Two sports journalists, Simon Abana and Philip Lilomo, played crucial roles in inspiring Elton’s love for football reporting. From compiling match reports to writing previews, he learned the workings of sports journalism. In sports photography, Charles Kadamana taught him the art of capturing action, reactions, and the essence of sporting moments.
A Passionate Storyteller
Elton’s easy-going nature and openness helped him build strong public relationships, gaining the trust of many inspiring individuals. He found joy in news reporting, interviews, and storytelling. “I’m an easy-going person and open to anybody. This helps my public relationships grow and brings many inspiring people into my life,” he shares.
The Impact of Social Media
Social media’s impact on sports journalism is a double-edged sword for Elton. While it provides relevant information and leads, it also blurs the lines of professionalism as everyone with a camera can claim to be a journalist. However, Elton believes that completing formal media studies remains essential to uphold journalism standards, even in the age of social media.
Challenges and Triumphs
Elton’s journey has not been without challenges. He has faced numerous obstacles from dealing with delays and maintaining professionalism to working overtime and managing personal commitments. Despite these challenges, his dedication never wavered. His significant contributions during the Pacific Games 2023, where he simultaneously took on the roles of reporter, editor, and online page manager, exemplify his commitment and versatility. “A lot of challenges and criticisms were faced along the way, but they shaped my priority rights over quality time spent with my children and the work that had to be done,” he notes.
Recognition and Future Aspirations
Elton’s hard work and dedication were recognized when he received the Sports Reporter Award. His impactful reporting on corruption, grassroots sports, and governance within sports institutions stood out. Mavis Nishimura Podokolo, the current editor for Island Sun, congratulated Elton on this milestone, saying, “Massive congratulations to his effort. The award is a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence and ability to perform tasks expected of a journalist with dedication and hard work.”
Advice to Young Journalists
Elton encourages young sports journalists to be open, fun, and professional. Building trust with sources, accepting criticism, and seeking advice from experienced colleagues are crucial. He emphasizes the importance of reading widely, writing impactful stories, and avoiding conflicts of interest. Above all, he urges young journalists to build their brand and byline, as it represents their identity and reputation in the field.
A Bright Future
At 27, with a bright future ahead, Elton Lonaratha Jnr continues to make his family, company, and his little daughter, Cyroldine Phoebe Lonaratha, proud. His journey is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and the impact of storytelling in sports journalism. As he looks to the future, Elton remains dedicated to elevating the standards of sports journalism in the Solomon Islands and inspiring the next generation of journalists.
