In their second match of pool D in the rugby competition for the XVII Pacific Games 2023, the Solomon Islands Rugby 7s Men’s Team defeated Wallis and Futuna 29–0 this afternoon at the National Stadium.
Solomon Islands Sevens Rugby Team head coach Chris Nay expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance to RAWSPORT, saying he was eager to play Papua New Guinea tomorrow.
“We are thrilled with our performance today, which advances us to the qualifying round, but we would really like to perform well against PNG tomorrow.
“This is our second game; we have one more against PNG in our pool before moving on to the qualifying rounds,” Nay told RAW SPORTS in the post-match interview.
The game plan has been carried out well, according to Coach Nay, but they will focus on areas for improvement tonight before their match against Papua New Guinea tomorrow, Friday, 24 of this week.
“We’ve been putting a lot of effort into improving our defense, so it pleases us much that no team has scored in tries (Tries) against us. That indicates that it is effective, which is good,” Nay said.
He said that their attacking is one area they will work.
“The attack needs to be fixed in a few places, and hopefully we can do that tonight before we prepare for PNG tomorrow,” he said.
Bobby Namson Sade, captain of the Solomon Rugby 7s team, has thanked the boys for their second victory.
“Thus far, so good, but there are still certain areas we need to improve before our Friday 24 match against Papua New Guinea,” Sade remarked, “I would like to thank the boys for the great game.”
The men’s rugby union 7s team from the Solomon Islands is in pool D with Tahiti, Wallis and Futuna, and Papua New Guinea.
Men’s rugby sevens teams from PNG and the Solomon Islands will play at the Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands, with the goal of winning pool D after defeating Tahiti and Wallis and Futuna.
