EIGHT teams from the Provincial Football Associations celebrated the opening of the Solomon Power Iumi Play Under-14 Championship 2024 at Lawson Tama Stadium this morning.
The event, organized by the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), marks a key moment in promoting youth football development across the Solomon Islands.
Young footballers from across the country participated in a parade showcasing their team colors and passion for the championship. The championship aims to provide a platform for young players to demonstrate their skills and learn from one another and promoting grassroots football development.
With matches set to begin this afternoon, the tournament promises a week of competitive football, featuring eight teams – both boys’ and girls’ categories. The championship, scheduled from September 16th to 20th, is expected to showcase the rising football talents in the Solomon Islands.
SIFF President Donald Marahare, speaking at the event, highlighted the importance of this initiative.
“The Iumi Play program is more than just a tournament; it’s a crucial step in nurturing young talent and driving football development throughout our country,” he said. Marahare expressed his pride in the program’s impact, stressing its role in offering every young footballer a chance to shine.
Vice President Robert Seni urged the young footballers to approach the tournament with pride and respect.
“This is your moment to showcase your skills and sportsmanship,” Seni encouraged the players. “Enjoy the game and remember that you are the future of Solomon Islands Football. We’re excited to watch you play.”
