WEST KWAIO — A strong call was made to leaders, communities, and stakeholders of West Kwaio Constituency to urgently support and revive netball development after a noticeable drop in team participation during the recent West Kwaio Netball Tournament.
Speaking at the event, Madam Margaret Wate, a netball representative, addressed the gathering with concern and hope, acknowledging the presence of the Guest of Honour, the Member for West Kwaio Constituency Hon. Claudius Teifi, the Chairman of the West Kwaio 2025 Committee, chiefs, women’s representatives, participating teams, spectators, men, women, and children.
Madam Wate highlighted that the low number of participating teams was a worrying sign, suggesting that many youths and women may be facing challenges such as lack of motivation, limited support, or inadequate resources to take part in sporting activities.
“If this situation continues, we risk losing the talent, energy, and positive spirit that sports bring to our communities,” she said.
She emphasized that netball plays a vital role in uniting villages, strengthening friendships, and promoting healthy lifestyles. According to her, sports keep young people engaged, help reduce social problems, and provide women and girls with a safe environment to build confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills.

Madam Wate respectfully called on leaders and stakeholders in West Kwaio to invest more in sports development through better management, provision of equipment, training programs, and the organization of regular competitions. She stressed that leadership support can greatly motivate youths and women and open doors to new opportunities.
She also encouraged parents, community leaders, churches, and schools to work together to motivate young people and women to actively participate in future West Kwaio tournaments.
“Sports are not a waste of time, but a pathway to unity and opportunity,” she reminded the audience.
Addressing youths and women directly, Madam Wate urged them to be brave, bring forward their abilities, and take part in sporting activities, noting that today’s participation can inspire tomorrow’s athletes.
In her closing remarks, she appealed to the sports committee to consider awarding a first-place netball trophy in 2026 and to introduce encouraging prizes to further motivate teams.
She ended her address by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2026, thanking all who supported the tournament and sharing hope for a stronger, healthier, and more united West Kwaio through sports.
