Two Pacific Games Technical Delegates have so far visited Honiara this month.
Amanda Jenkins, the Technical Delegate (TD) for Basketball visited the country last week, whilst Graeme Ireland, the TD for Table Tennis landed in the country yesterday.
Both TDs are important to the preparations and successful delivery of their respective sporting events at this year’s Sol2023 Pacific Games.
Their roles include assessing and granting approvals on sports venues and facilities, sports equipment, field of play, sports officials – ensuring everything complies with Pacific Games standards and requirements.
A big part of technical delegates visits include meeting with all functional areas of the GOC (Games Organizing Committee), Government Ministries, Sport Institutes and Sports Federations in Solomon Islands.
Over the last year, GOC has received and hosted the technical delegates for Taekwondo and Weightlifting.
Ms Jenkins, who is also the Executive Director for FIBA said that the visit was basically to oversee preparations for basketball competitions at the Games this year.
“The aim of the visit is really to get a better understanding about preparations and how the events will take place at the Games and to ensure that our athletes are being looked after and that we deliver the best events possible,” she said.
Whilst in Honiara, Jenkins briefly visited the proposed venues for basketball and 3×3 competitions which include; Friendship Hall Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, HCC Sports Precincts and the SIFF Academy at KGVI.
Impressed with the preparations, Jenkins said that she is indeed excited about this year’s Pacific Games basketball competitions adding that she is expecting very high level basketball from all 16 qualifying teams for both men and women.
The men’s qualifying teams include; Guam, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Samoa.
The women’s qualifying teams include; Guam, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Tahiti.
