THE Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has urged provincial athletes participating in the Solomon Games this year to strive for excellence and aim high if they wish to be part of the national team representing their country in the upcoming Pacific Games in November.
Speaking as the guest of honor during the opening ceremony this morning, Sogavare acknowledged the lack of proper training facilities in the provinces but emphasized the abundance of untapped talent that needs to be showcased during the games.
“I know you can do it and I make this call because I know that we have tremendous talents in our provinces. I understand many of you do not have proper facilities to train in.
“However, it is my hope that each of you will showcase your talents and your potential during these Games. As some of you might even break into the team Solomons squad to the Pacific Games,” PM Sogavare stressed.
He also highlighted the significance of this year’s Solomon Games, not only as the first since 2016 but also as an essential platform for sports federations and the National Olympic Committee to scout for emerging talents.
Similarly, Karl Kuper, Chair of the Solomon Games, urged athletes, coaches, and spectators to make the most of the event by building new friendships, learning from each other, and enjoying the games. He emphasized that the competition would be an opportunity for provincial athletes to be selected for the national team and reminded them that they are ambassadors of their communities and provinces.
“Not only we will be exposing our raw talent from out there in the provinces, but hopefully, these games will provide an avenue for many of our provincial athletes to be selected to represent our country come November.
“To these athletes. Remember that you are the ambassadors of your provinces and your communities,” Mr. Kuper said.
He expressed his excitement to witness the collective efforts of the athletes and to see some of them leave the games with medals, trophies, and bragging rights, as they carry the pride and honor of being champions of the Solomon Games.
Hundreds of athletes from nine provinces, including Honiara, will participate in nine sports during the weeklong event, which began on Monday and is expected to conclude this weekend.
