Next month, Honiara will take centre stage as Solomon Islands hosts the eagerly awaited FIBA Melanesia Cup and FIBA Women’s Melanesian Cup.
Among the national men’s team players representing the country on home soil is Kalita Maelasi, a versatile and determined athlete who is ready to give his all for the nation.
Maelasi, who plays across three key positions, ‘Centre, Power Forward and Small Forward’ says competing in the FIBA Melanesia Cup is more than just a tournament, it is a moment of personal and national pride.
“Competing for our home country in the upcoming FIBA Melanesia Cup is huge for me to represent my culture, heritage and family name. I look forward to representing Solomon Islands with pride,” said Maelasi.
The FIBA Melanesia Cup serves as an important step in the preparations for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti. Maelasi describes the competition as both a test and a stepping stone.
“Playing in this tournament helps us develop and prepare for the next Pacific Games. It is all part of building toward something bigger,” he added.
The team has been training intensely, focusing on translating practice drills into effective game performance. Maelasi emphasized their commitment to sticking to their game plans throughout the tournament.

A key focus for the team has been improving both defensive and offensive strategies as they aim to compete at the highest level.
“One technical area we are focusing on is our defence, while also working hard to improve our offense. We want to showcase everything we have worked for on the court,” Maelasi explained.
Despite the pressure of playing before a home crowd, Maelasi embraces it with confidence.
“I play with my heart, leaving everything on the floor. The only pressure I feel is knowing that no matter the result, we have already achieved something great by reaching this stage. I am proud of how much we have grown as a team,” said Maelasi.
Maelasi also has personal goals for the tournament, including improving his scoring and overall performance from previous competitions.
“One of my goals is to improve on my stats from past events, focusing on my points and helping my teammates as much as I can,” said Maelasi.
Looking ahead, Maelasi is eager to help the team qualify for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti.
“If we qualify, I want to showcase my talent not just for myself but for the whole team. We are in this together,” said Maelasi.
Maelasi also shared words of encouragement for young aspiring basketball players in Solomon Islands.
“Strive to do your best and do not be afraid to chase your dreams. Do not let negative comments destroy your ambition. Use your heart to chase your dream,” urge Maelasi.
Reflecting on his legacy, Maelasi said simply “Follow your heart and achieve your dream.”
He concluded with gratitude for his supporters.
“To my family, aunts and uncles here in Solomon Islands, thank you for all your support. I am very grateful. Love you guys very much,” said Maelasi.
The FIBA Melanesia Cup and FIBA Women’s Melanesian Cup will take place in Honiara from October 13-18 at the Friendship Hall, with the Solomon Islands national teams for both men and women carrying the hopes of the nation.
