THE young athletes, ages 14 to 35, who will represent the Solomon Islands in the eagerly awaited 2023 Pacific Games, marched today in a heartfelt show of solidarity and patriotism.
Team Solomon, carrying the national flag of ‘One Nation, One Team Solomon for the Pacific Games,’ paraded through Honiara’s business district, symbolizing unity and solidarity.
There is a buzz of excitement and anticipation in the air as the Pacific Games draw closer, less than three weeks away.
A remarkable gathering of 5,000 athletes from 24 countries are expected to gather in Honiara for the 2023 Pacific Games from November 19 to December 2. It is one of the biggest international competitions the country has ever staged, with these individuals competing in 24 different sports.
Prominent individuals, including Governor General Sir David Vunagi, prominent government officials, and representatives of sports groups, graced the historic march. During his speech, the Governor General expressed support and optimism for Team Solomon, highlighting the country’s shared goal of winning gold medals.
Sir David urged the athletes on, saying, “Today we support you with all our best wishes, and as a nation; we expect nothing less than gold medals.”
The national anthem, which filled the air, was a moving reminder of the Solomon Islands’ one bond.
In order to convey the importance of this occasion, Sir Vunagi said, “Every inhabitant of our cherished Solomon Islands should be proud of this occasion. As we get ready to leave our mark on the international sporting scene, we accept the challenges as a team, appreciate our diversity, and remain one.”
As Team Solomon gets ready to represent the Solomon Islands in the 2023 Pacific Games, the nation’s unwavering support and passion are evident in the vibrant march and the inspiring environment of unity displayed today. They have the potential to make a lasting impression on the regional sporting scene as a united nation.
