IT’S fair to say that hockey is not a popular sport in the Solomon Islands, as current national female hockey player demands more youths to participate in the sport.
“I am encouraging all young people in Honiara to avail themselves and register their participation to train under the experience of local hockey coaches and senior players of the sport,” says senior member of the Solomon Islands national female hockey team, Esmie Belo.
She’s taking her stand to encourage interested young people to be part of the preparation for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara and the development focus of hockey as a sport in the country.
Esmie, 40, is currently a member of the Solomon Islands national women’s hockey team preparing for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara.
She also represented the country in both regional and international hockey tournaments. In 2015, she represented the Solomon Islands at the XV Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. By 2017 she also makes history to participate in a hockey championship in Sydney, Australia.
Esmie, told Raw Sports young people and parents need to understand that hockey is for everyone especially as we look forward to hosting the biggest games in our history.
She encouraged parents to reach out to the Solomon Islands Hockey Federation and learn what their options are for getting their teenagers signed up.
The Solomon Islands national hockey training team scheduled weekly training sessions are held at the Woodford International School, East of Honiara.
