PRIME Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele officially opened the Oceania Rugby7s tournament in Honiara yesterday, expressing gratitude and pride in the Solomon Islands’ opportunity to host the prestigious event.
During his remarks, the Prime Minister thanked Oceania Rugby for trusting the Solomon Islands with this honor, emphasizing the significance of such events in overcoming the nation’s challenges and seizing growth opportunities.
“I am truly humbled and privileged by the trust and confidence that you have shown in our country. We are a small country, our government is new in office, and we have many challenges facing us. However, we refuse to be defined by these challenges,” he stated.
PM Manele highlighted the potential for the tournament to not only strengthen the Oceania Rugby community but also promote the Solomon Islands’ tourism sector to an international audience.
“This is a great opportunity to build and grow our Oceania Rugby family. Hosting such an event will market Solomon Islands to the outside world, considering the international audience that will be watching this event,” he said.
The Solomon Islands Government has signed a host agreement with Oceania Rugby, securing the first right of refusal for hosting the event in 2025 and 2026. While acknowledging the short preparation time for this year, the Prime Minister assured attendees of the government’s commitment to making the event a success.
PM Manele also expressed optimism about enhancing visitor experiences in future events through collaborations with airlines, hoteliers, and other private sector stakeholders.
In recognizing the People’s Republic of China’s contribution to the development of world-class sports facilities, PM Manele noted their role in enabling the nation to host international events like the Oceania Rugby7s and other upcoming tournaments.
Looking forward, the Prime Minister mentioned ongoing informal discussions about potential partnerships with the Australian A-League and Super Rugby, including hosting pre-season or competition games in Honiara.
“We believe in Oceania Rugby’s principles of integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline, and respect. I look forward to seeing these principles displayed on and off the field,” he added.
PM Manele concluded by extending his gratitude to Oceania Rugby, the Solomon Islands Rugby Federation, and all contributors who made the event possible. He wished the teams well and prayed for blessings and protection over all participants and attendees.
The Oceania Rugby7s tournament promises to be a celebration of sportsmanship and unity, showcasing the Solomon Islands’ readiness to host premier international events.
