The outgoing President of the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), William Lai, expressed his gratitude and well wishes to the football community, fans, and families as he concluded his solid 8-year tenure of service.
Mr. Lai, who spearheaded the growth of football in the country during his presidency since 2015, departed for his homeland China on Sunday, June 11th.
During his farewell party at Cow Boy’s Grill on Saturday, June 10th, he urged the incoming president and executive to continue the progress made and elevate football in the country to new heights.

Lai emphasized the importance of collaboration throughout his 8-year journey as the President, acknowledging the support and friendship he received from those around him. He credited this camaraderie as his inspiration to contribute to football in the Solomon Islands.
Recognizing the need for partnerships and financial resources for football to flourish, Lai expressed his gratitude for the backing of his executive and their trust in his leadership. He cited several achievements during his tenure, including the significant improvement in the FIFA ranking of Solomon Islands, rising from 190 to 134, making them the second-ranked team in Oceania.
Reflecting on his presidency, Lai shared his multitude of memories, from happiness and stress to sadness and love. He expressed his appreciation for his wife’s unwavering support throughout his work in football.
Lai emphasized the importance of friendship and unity, highlighting that the foundation he established for SIFF was built upon collaboration. He commended the government for investing in football infrastructure, making SIFF’s headquarters the largest in Oceania, and recognizing the sport’s ability to promote unity, solidarity, empowerment, and social responsibility.
Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, the guest speaker at the farewell event, lauded Lai’s commitment, hard work, and vision for football in the country. He described Lai as an inspirational leader who elevated Solomon Islands football to unprecedented heights through his passion, commitment, and visionary leadership.

Under Lai’s guidance, Solomon Islands experienced remarkable growth on and off the field. Agovaka acknowledged Lai’s efforts in nurturing young talents through grassroots programs, improving infrastructure, and paving the way for the next generation of footballers.
Agovaka also praised Lai’s dedication to fostering unity within the football community and his ability to build relationships with football associations worldwide. He acknowledged Lai’s belief that football can drive positive change for coaches, fans, and the entire football arena.
As Lai embarked on a new chapter in his life, Agovaka expressed profound gratitude for his remarkable leadership and service. He recognized Lai’s lasting impact on football development in the Solomon Islands and extended heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the entire football community.
Meanwhile, Agovaka congratulated Lai on stepping down as SIFF President and offered best wishes for his future endeavors. He emphasized that Lai’s contributions to football in the Solomon Islands would forever hold a special place in their hearts and be remembered for years to come.
