THE hosting of an elite refereeing seminar at the Kitano Mendana Hotel in Honiara, Solomon Islands marked a historic milestone as the first time this event has been held outside of Auckland, New Zealand.
SIFF President Donald Marahare expressed his excitement and gratitude during the opening of the seminar yesterday, emphasizing the significance of this occasion for Solomon Islands football.
“I was told that this is the first time this particular event has been hosted outside of Auckland and by another member association. So for us, this is a very big honor indeed,” Marahare stated in an interview with local media.

The seminar comes at an opportune moment, just days before the OFC Champions League kicks off. Marahare highlighted the importance of the event in developing local referees, providing them with an opportunity to be part of high-level officiating as the country aims to increase the number of qualified FIFA and OFC referees in the coming years.
“This event will definitely provide the appropriate forum for us to move forward. One of our key initiatives is to ensure that we have more qualified FIFA and OFC referees within the next few years,” he added.
In addition to referee development, the event serves as a chance for Solomon Islands to demonstrate its capability in hosting international competitions, particularly as it prepares to host the prestigious OFC Men’s Champions League.
This is the premier club football tournament in the region and will provide a platform for the local club, Central Coast FC, to showcase its talent in front of home supporters.
Marahare called on all football fans in Honiara and across the provinces to come out in full force and support the competition.
“This is the premier event for the best clubs in the region, and it promises to be a tough and exciting tournament.
I urge all soccer fans to come and support the home team while also respecting and supporting the visiting clubs,” he said.
The tournament is set to kick off on Sunday, promising thrilling football action and an electric atmosphere in the Solomon Islands.
With passionate fans and a strong home team presence, the event is expected to be a memorable showcase of regional football talent.
