MII Piri-Savage has shattered barriers and made history for women in football in Oceania region by becoming the first female to take on the role of head coach in the OFC Men’s Club Championship.
Speaking at an OFC press conference today at the National Stadium in Honiara, Piri-Savage reflected on the significance of this achievement for women in the sport.
“I think history has been made for women in football. It is a pedestal, a high pedestal to fill, but in saying that, it’s nothing that women cannot do.
We’re never given the chance—embrace it,” she stated. “You’re only a rookie once in any situation. So embrace the experience and take up the challenge. And I do encourage more women to get involved with men’s football.”
Piri-Savage, now leading the Cook Islands’ team Tupapa Maraerenga FC in the prestigious competition, acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized her commitment to learning and growing in her new role.
“It’s a new thing for me, but I’m learning, learning. In terms of team preparation, our team has been preparing the best we can for this tournament. We’re up against the big guns in the region.”
In an exclusive interview with Raw Sport, Piri-Savage expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach the men’s team at such a high level.
“Feeling very grateful for the opportunity to be the head coach for our men’s team in this competition,” she said. “There’s a bit of pressure, but again, when there’s pressure, its good pressure, and you’ve just got to embrace it as you go into this tournament.”
As for expectations, the trailblazing coach remains focused on ensuring her squad gives their best performance and remains competitive.
“As a coach, all I can ask of my team is to do the best they can, to be competitive, and to put on the best performance they can at this tournament.”
Piri-Savage also took the opportunity to rally fans and supporters, both at home and in attendance.
“To all our fans, our supporters back home, even if we have supporters here, just rally up, get behind our team, and keep encouraging our players as they take the field
