THE Sir Peter Kenilorea Chess Championship will now be held on 31 July 2021 instead of 17 July.
President of the Solomon Islands Chess Federation, Mr. Anthony Maelasi says the Executive has decided to defer the Championship to give ample time for registration.
Mr. Maelasi says the Solomon Islands Chess Federation has been planning the Championship for quite some time and is looking forward to hosting this event for interested chess players and clubs.
He says the Federation is also looking for teams to take part in a Global On-Line Chess Tournament thus this is an opportune time for the Federation to select teams for an online tournament scheduled for September.
‘The Sir Peter Kenilorea Championship will be a Blitz and Rapid tournament”, Maelasi said.
“It will be the first time for the federation to host a Blitz tournament. It is a fast game where each player has 5 minutes to play against the other. If there is no checkmate, whoever runs out of time loses the game”, Mr. Maelasi said.
A Rapid tournament will then start straight after the Blitz tournament. This is to be played in teams and clubs.
“It will be a 5 Round tournament and under the Rapid tournament, each player will have 25 minutes,” Maelasi explained.
He says Chess players wishing to participate in the Championship must make sure they are part of a club or team to take part in the championship. Maelasi says new teams must also register with the federation to participate in the championship.
Maelasi encourages youths interested in chess to organise themselves to form a team for the championship. He said there are also great prizes to be won.
“No doubt, this year’s independence celebration is truly special with the revamp of a number of activities for our young people in the country. This indeed, is something that we don’t take for granted, but wishes to acknowledge the social and ethical influences this has on our young people”, Maelasi said.
He said new Chess Players wishing to participate in the championship can contact the Federation’s Treasurer through the Solomon Islands Chess Federation Facebook Page.
“Just send us a message via Facebook Messenger and we will communicate thereon with the registration details”, Maelasi said.
The Sir Peter Kenilorea Chess Championship started in 2019. It was then cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
