Honiara, 16th May 2022 – High-Performance Portfolio 1 Combat & Weight Sports coaches currently on High-Performance coach development scholarship at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS) were introduced to a periodization training system.
For the first time, the coaches had an overview of the training concept which is concentrated on deliberate manipulation of training variables to optimize performance for competition, prevent overtraining, and progress performance.
This is for coaches to understand the important aspects of an annual plan, and concepts of periodization, develop a periodization program for their sport and develop training designs.
It’s a time management process for training, competition and recovery programs that will enhance athlete performance. Coaches also get to understand how they can set up a strategic plan to avoid or minimize periods of fatigue, injury and over train (burnout).
The program provides a framework that arranges the complex array of training processes;
- Skill development
- Strength training
- Regeneration
These are directed into a logical schedule to bring about optimal improvements in athletes’ performance – also had an overview of the components of periodization and its phases; preparation, competition and transition.
Bodybuilder and Coach Mustafa Rade says that personal the program is an eye-opener and a vital plan for coaches and athletes to benefit from.
“The periodization program my perspective is very important for athletes and coaches. Through this concept coaches can work out a plan for training in preparing towards competitions,” Rade stated.
“It’s a work plan where coaches can break down weekly and monthly training schedules for athletes through the preparation phases towards a competition.
He said through the periodization tool he can now determine days and weeks ahead of competitions specifically to his sport.

Periodization can decrease the risk of overtraining and injury, maximize strength, speed and endurance, and help combat training.
The coaching program is a key component of the SINIS Coach Development Strategy for all sporting portfolio. It will be delivered in partnership with the National Federations and support coaches across all National Federations participating in the 2023 Pacific Games.
