The Solomon Islands Amateur Boxing Association (SIABA) aspirations to increase development activities and opportunities for potential female boxers have scored points by enabling the young talents to make the best of their ability.
With support from the Solomon Island National Institute of Sport (SINIS) High-Performance program’s Talent Pathways department the 34 identified talents are continuing their schedule entering week 2.
Under the guidance of SIABA Coach Howard Peter who is currently on a High-Performance coach development scholarship – their weekly sessions were based on basic boxing skills and prioritizing the young ones.
The sessions are aligned with the talent initiatives and aim to bring together a wide range of expertise to assist the development of the most outstanding young boxers.
Coach Peter was impressed that the new athletes are improving a lot and have exceptionally performed throughout.
“Our first session was last week on introductory and basic lessons.
“After the session today I notice the athletes have improved step by step – their basic stance, guard and movement. Currently, there were 34 athletes including female boxers from local clubs in Honiara,” he said.
He added that these talents are inevitable, and needed time to gain more confidence to perform.
“This week’s sessions are still on basics.
✅Foot-works
✅Balancing (Forward, Backward & Sideways)
✅Straight Punches (jabs)
“These are the foundation of boxing, and it is very important especially for the new athletes to get familiar with,” Coach Peter said.

“It will take time for the athletes, especially the new ones, but by looking at next year’s event we believe we still have more time to prepare ahead through their commitment.
“After six weeks of basic training, the participants will be given a sparring session, and we will be encouraging the new talents to allow them to experience a boxing bout and put into practice what they have learned throughout the training sessions.

“From there, we will work on a final assessment where we will begin to trim a potential squad – the best out of the rest.
