THE Pacific Games 2023 Games Organising Committee [GOC] is trying its best to set an enabling sporting environment ahead of the 17th Pacific Games to be hosted here in Honiara.
“There are a lot of areas where we have to put more effort into to be able to provide the services that we need for our ultimate mission,’’ said GOC Chief executive officer, Mr Peter Steward.
“Our ultimate mission is to provide the best possible environment for the athletes of the pacific to compete at their very best, that is what our key objective is,’’ he said.
Speaking at a Press Conference at the SINIS Facility handing over Ceremony on March 11, Mr Peter Steward said many people viewed the games only as a sporting event.
“But the Pacific games is actually a huge nationwide capacity building project. The games provide an opportunity for SI to improve the capacity of its workforce, the capacity of businesses, and to promote SI not only in the region but across the world,’’ said Peter Steward.
He further added that during the two weeks period of the Pacific Games, the GOC will be delivering somewhere between 15 and 20 thousand meals per day which would make SI perhaps the largest restaurant in the region and the world for only two weeks,’’ he said.
He further stated that GOC will ensure three and half thousand-bed hotel for the games villages is set, which again makes SI one of the largest hotels in the world and in the pacific region for that two weeks.
Mr Steward also assured that 60 tons of wastes will be produced every day during the period of the events and that need to be managed and looked after in a responsible manner.
“We will be producing 60 tons of wastes every day that we need to manage, look after in a responsible manner,’’ he said.
He also revealed that they (GOC) will be running a games transport fleet of around three hundred vehicles during the games period for transportations purposes.
“So you see, there are a lot of areas where we have to put effort into to be able to provide the services that we need for our ultimate mission which is to provide the best possible environment for the athletes of the pacific to compete at their very best- that what our key objective is,’’ he said.
