ISAAC Myrie became the first athlete from the Solomon Islands Taekwondo Team to win gold in the under-54kg male finals yesterday at Sport City’s National Aquatics Centre, east of Honiara.
“I naturally believe the fight was not that easy, but thanks to the home supporters, they gave me confidence to finish my kicks with a gold medal,” Isaac revealed to RAW SPORTS. “The cheering of the home crowd gave me energy and confidence that contributed to my win.”
His victory over Papua New Guinea (PNG) would undoubtedly add a gold medal to Team Solomon’s total medal count at the XVII Pacific Games in 2023.
Isaac is no stranger to his PNG opponent; they both participated in the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, where Isaac was defeated. But to win the gold medal at the Pacific Games this year is truly extraordinary.
He praised all of his teammates for their efforts, noting that the majority of them also won medals for their nation.
In addition, he expressed gratitude to the Taekwondo Federation for its unwavering support leading up to and during the Pacific Games in 2023.
“Many thanks to Mr. Derick Afu, the president of the Solomon Islands, and all the coaches, including Gibson Sira, Junior Maetia, and those dedicated mentors from Australia and China.
