MINISTER of Communication and Aviation, Honourable, Peter Shanel Agovaka has paid tribute to the outgoing Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), President William Lai who has decided not to seek re-election.
Addressing guests at William Lai’s special farewell dinner party held at the Pacific Crown Hotel’s Cowboys Grill on 10 June, Honourable, Peter Shanel Agovaka used his speech to commend the country’s outgoing football boss for his inspirational leadership concerning football development during his distinguished terms.
“As we gathered here to bid farewell to a remarkable leader William Lai who is stepping out as the president of SIFF after eight extraordinary years of service, this occasion is filled with mixed emotions as we celebrate his remarkable achievements while also acknowledging his departure and the history he creates in football.
“Lai was an inspirational leader taking Solomon Islands football to unprecedented huts through his passion for the sport, unwavering commitment, and visionary leadership which has left a remarkable mark on our nation.
“Under his guidance, Solomon Islands has experienced tremendous growth reaching new levels both on and off the field. Lai’s tenure has been defined by his desire to uplift sport in our beloved country.
“Lai’s unwavering dedication to the betterment of football in the Solomon Islands has helped pave the way for unity among the football community.
“Your contribution to football, William Lai, has been a remarkable ambassador for our nation. Your exceptional leadership and diploma-ship have fostered so many relationships through football associations around the world,’’ the Minister of Communication and Aviation said.
Honourable, Peter Shanel further continued: “Lai’s unity, compassion, and unwavering belief about football is a force for a positive change for the football arena of our country, coaches, and football fans alike.
“As we now embark on his new chapter in his life we extend our deepest gratitude for his remarkable leadership and service. We thank him for his excellent commitment to the development of football in our nation and his extraordinary vision.
“The impact of his service will continue to be felt in years to come. On behalf of the entire football community, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to you, for your adorable contribution to the football of this beloved country Solomon Islands.
“As you step down as SIFF president we offer you our sincere congratulation and best wishes in the future. You will forever grow a special place in our hearts and your extraordinary contributions to football in the Solomon Islands will never be forgotten,’’ said Hon Agovaka.
The outgoing SIFF President, William Lai, who spearheaded the growth of football in the country during his presidency in 2015 has decided not to seek re-election.
Meanwhile, four candidates are vying for the position of the SIFF President. They are Eddie Omokirio, Donald Marahare, Marlon Houkarawa, and Dr. John Iromea.
The election for the presidential post will be held at the Heritage Park Hotel when SIFF elective congress takes place today.
