SOLOMON Islands Karate Federation (SIKF) has selected a squad of 10 Karatekas have left the contry to participate at the Karate Oceania Championship scheduled for July next month in New Zealand.
6 males and 4 females have been selected for the team who have been on intensive training at the Solomon Islands Institute of Sports Complex training facility.
Solomon Islands National Karate Assistant Coach Selwyn Kuru told RAW SPORTS the team will be leaving for Australia, and they will undergo three days of training in Gold Coast before flying to Christchurch in New Zealand where the Championship will take place from 1st to 2nd July 2023.
“The tournament will be a nice exposure for the young athletes because a lot of these fighters who will be fighting in this tournament will also be participating in the upcoming 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara later this year.
“This tournament will be a nice exposure for our young fighters to feel the pressure when playing against fighters from other countries.
“Also the result of this competition will help to motivate our athletes’ confidence as they prepare ahead of the Games in Honiara.
The Karate Assistant coach said that the tournament will be tough because it will include fighters from other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia.
