THE Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports, Solomon Islands National University and University of South Pacific yesterday marked the International Day of University Sport with a series of fun and engaging sports activities at Ranadi, East of Honiara.
Teams made up of students from the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and University of South Pacific (USP) were allowed to participate in several sporting activities like basketball 3×3, beach volleyball, and touch rugby matches at the Solomon Islands National Institute (SINIS) of Sports complex grounds.
The International Day of University Sport (IDUS) is a key official sports event approved on the agenda of the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) and adopted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to be celebrated annually on September 20, to create links between universities and local communities to develop both health and sport for everyone.
Director of the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports (SINIS), Aaron Alsop said it is a very important day where across the globe, since the International Day of University Sport brings universities and their communities together once again to honor sport, health, and physical activity.
He thanked tertiary students for coming together, having fun, and developing such a sporting culture.
“On behalf of SINIS, I would like to thank the students from the University of South Pacific (USP) and Solomon Islands National University (SINU) to take part in the International Day of University Sport and advise them to keep the sport growing in the country.
He said that it’s an important platform to exchange ideas, developments, challenges, and opportunities with our national and international partners.
“The event acts as a powerful tool that fosters collaboration, positivity, performance, and engagement.
“Sport plays a major role in the SINIS plans for the P2023 Pacific Games and, as a national institute of sports, we aim to support our nation’s vision through many ambitious initiatives that will achieve economic and human development,” he said.
