SOLOMON Islands World Taekwondo Union has selected sixteen men and women to train and represent the Solomon Islands at the upcoming Pacific Games next year in Honiara.
Solomon Islands World Taekwondo Union vice president Joses Duddley said the confirmed 32 athletes have started training to contest at the coming Sol Pacific games next year.
“The Solomon Islands World Taekwondo Union is gearing up preparations towards the PG2023.
“A total of 32 Taekwondo athletes are now doing their professional training at SINIS,’’ said Duddley.
“The sixteen men and sixteen women will compete in pairs under eight categories or weight,’’ explained Duddley.
He also expressed his acknowledgement to SINIS High-performance program to help improve and maintain practical athletes in the country.
“We are expecting to see big changes with our athletes since SINIS is here. SINIS will equip the athletes taking them to a higher level of preparedness to contest in the upcoming games,’’ he said.
He stated that the selected athletes come from different Taekwondo federations in Honiara.
“Athletes come from different federations. We do two pieces of training per week, candidates also do training with their respective clubs during their spare times,’’ said Duddley.
According to the SI Taekwondo Union Vice President, their focus is to win medals for the country at the Pacific Games.
Mr Dudley told Rawsports that with the SINIS High-performance program, they are hopeful that they will win medals.
“We will win medals at the Sol Pacific games, something we have been anticipating and hoping for. We will have at least 2-3 medals during the event,” he said.
The Solomon Islands world taekwondo union signed the partnership agreement with the Solomon Island National Institute Of Sports – High-Performance Program late in January.
The agreement allows the SIWTU to access the SINIS High-performance programs and to use appropriate facilities in preparation for the Games next year.
