ANYONE’S game, but despite going down against Fiji, Solomon Islands women’s Team Captain Ileen Pegi say, ‘Thank you.
In a poignant moment after the recent match against Fiji at the Lawson Tama Stadium, Solomon Islands Women Team Captain Ileen Pegi expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from friends, families, and citizens of Solomon Islands.
Despite a 4-1 defeat to Fiji, Pegi was visibly moved as she thank citizens for standing by the team from the very beginning to the end.
“It is truly heartening to see the number of people who came out to support us against Fiji. Your presence, support, and prayers have been our strength from day one until today [Friday],” Pegi said with tears.
Recognizing the historic significance of the large turnout, the Solomon Islands Women’s Team Captain emphasize the unprecedented support for women’s football in the country.
Acknowledging the match result, Pegi commend her players for their unwavering effort on the field. Even in defeat, she took the time to positively highlight the team’s capabilities and resilience.
“We may not have secured the win, but the spirit and determination displayed by our players is commendable, thank you,” said Pegi.
Pegi stresses the importance of using this experience as a stepping stone for improvement in future competitions.
Looking ahead to the Olympic Games in 2024, Pegi express their determination to build on the lessons learnt from their recent match and use them to fuel the team’s progress into the future.
The Fijian team during the recent Pool C game against the Solomon Islands women showcased unstoppable momentum, securing a significant win against the host country and tournament favourite, securing a spot in the semi-finals of the XVII Pacific Games.
Solomon Islands Soccer women, despite the loss, take it as a stepping stone for improvement, remaining undeterred, and using the experience as a foundation for future success in soccer for women in the country on the international stage.
