BOXING is a male-dominated sport in the Solomon Islands, but now talented female boxers have begun to emerge on the local scene. One young woman from the provinces of Guadalcanal and Renbel is hoping to make her fight debut at the 2023 Pacific Games.
Delnita Angikitasi, 21, who is also a keen rugby player says she had grown to love boxing from childhood. It was her father who motivated her to take up boxing.
“I decided to take up boxing because of my father’s influence and motivation. He was a boxer himself, and he told me to join the Solomon Islands Amateur Boxing Association (SIABA) this year, 2022, to prepare me for the upcoming 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara,” the 21-years-old Angikitasi told RAW SPORTS.
Delnita Angikitasi now hopes to inspire other young generation of female boxers in the country by training hard as much as possible to register her name in the Solomon Islands boxing final team for next year’s Pacific Games.
“I am practicing hard on my weekly gym and ring sparring sessions under the high-performance program at the Solomon Islands Institution of Sports Complex.
“My main aim is I want to represent the country and perform to my best, and if possible to win medals at the Games,” she said.
