ATHLETES from the Solomon Islands Hockey Federation had undergone a one-day initial identification program.
The event was held on 11 March at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport at Ranadi, East of Honiara.
Solomon Islands Hockey Development Officer Mr. Allen Temoa exclusively told Raw Sports that the Federation has selected 22 athletes to undergo the program at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport.
“We selected 11 males and 11 females to undergo the talent identification program to start their training at the Solomon Islands National institute of sport.
“We should send 40 athletes to undergo the program but due to the shortage of workforces within the High-Performance team, we decided to send only 22 for a start.
“The new facility and its environment would improve individuals build up in our preparation. We also have some senior players inside the squad that would help a lot in the preparations, especially to assist the new ones,’’ Temora said.
Temoa is adamant that Solomon Islands Hockey Federation want to ensure they make history in Pacific Games XVII 2023.
“We are aiming to make history. That is to win a medal for the country- that’s our aim, we are aiming that higher.
“The final squad would consist of ten men and ten women,” said Temoa.
He said that the Solomon Islands Hockey Federation would make known their final squad around July next year 2023.
“We need to improve in many things including basic skills and knowledge about the games.
“Positively we have some former senior players inside the squad therefore we hope that they too would help the new ones in our preparations,’’ Temoa said.
