Broken bones, sprained ankles and split-second decisions are all part of sport, but coaches and umpires across the Solomon Islands are now better equipped to handle them thanks to a first aid and sports trainer training initiative delivered through the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) International Sports Program.
Delivered by St John Ambulance Solomon Islands and an ADF-accredited sports trainer, the workshop combined practical and theory-based sessions focused on injury prevention, emergency response and athlete welfare.

The training aimed to build sustainable skills within the local sporting community, ensuring participants can confidently manage injuries both on and off the field.
“Injury prevention isn’t just about treating a problem when it happens, it’s about teaching coaches to spot the risks before they become an injury,” said ADF-accredited sports trainer, Major Linda Davis.
“We ran through everything from basic wound care to strapping techniques, but the real value was watching the participants practise on each other and build their confidence.”
“Long after we’ve gone, these coaches and officials will continue using what they’ve learned to keep athletes’ safe and support the growth of local sport,” said Major Davis.
For many participants, the course provided practical knowledge that can be immediately applied at training sessions, competitions and community sporting events, helping to create safer environments for athletes at all levels.
“Before this course, I wasn’t always confident responding to injuries on the field, but now I have a much better understanding of what to do in those first critical moments,” said a Solomon Island participant.
“The practical sessions were especially valuable because we were able to practise the techniques ourselves. These are skills I can take back to my community and share with other coaches and athletes.”
The initiative leaves a lasting benefit for sporting communities across the Solomon Islands, with participants now equipped to support athlete welfare and respond confidently when injuries occur.
Through initiatives like this, the ADF International Sports Program continues to support the development of local capability, empowering communities to strengthen sport from the grassroots level.
