Founder of Papua New Guinea football powerhouse Hekari United FC and current Oceania Football Confederation Vice President, John Kapi Nato, has called for unity, commitment and a shared vision as Ghupo Wantoks FC embarks on its football journey.
Speaking at the official launch of Ghupo Wantoks FC at Iron Bottom Sound (IBS) Monarch Bar and Grill on Saturday night, Kapi Nato said the event represented more than the birth of a football club.
“Tonight, is not just the launching of Ghupo Wantoks FC. It is a celebration of connection — connecting us together. It is about unity and embracing the power and beauty of football to bring all of us together,” he told guests.
The launch brought together football officials, sponsors, former players, supporters and invited guests, with speeches highlighting youth development, regional partnerships and the club’s long-term ambitions.
The programme also featured entertainment, presentations, fundraising activities and acknowledgements of sponsors and supporters who contributed to the club’s establishment.
Kapi Nato welcomed stakeholders from across the sporting community, including other sports representatives, development partners and supporters, stressing the importance of broad-based support for football clubs.
“We want to bring more stakeholders to support clubs and continue supporting the journey of Ghupo Wantoks FC,” he said. “Ghupo represents the people of Rennell and Bellona.”
He also highlighted the growing partnership between Hekari United FC and Ghupo Wantoks FC, describing it as a relationship built on shared values and common goals.
“It is true that we are going to share a vision together, and we must all have passion, loyalty, commitment and a love for our club football. We must all believe in rising together,” he said.
Kapi Nato said football was much more than a game, describing it as a powerful tool that creates friendships, strengthens identity and opens opportunities for young people.
Kapi Natto continue to highlight strongly that “Football is more than a sport. It is a common language that creates friendships, builds a shared identity and provides opportunities for our young people. We are laying the foundation and setting a legacy for the next generation,” he said.
Addressing club officials and members, Kapi Nato challenged them to remain focused on building a strong organisation through hard work and collective effort.
“Tonight’s launch is a commitment and Ghupo Wantoks FC has a huge responsibility ahead. You have to work hard,” he said.
“Officials and members must work collectively, share the same vision and pursue the same objectives,” Kapi said.
He encouraged club leaders to focus on development and sustainability rather than financial gain.
“Forget about the money. Money comes later. Sponsorship must come from the heart. You have to work for it. You have to build this club and build the organisation,” he said.
Kapi Nato’s message reinforced the importance of dedication, teamwork and community support as Ghupo Wantoks FC begins its journey to establish itself as a competitive football club while creating opportunities for young footballers not only from Rennell and Bellona but open for other young footballers from other provinces to join the club.
