The Solomon Islands Chess Federation has concluded a successful three day engagement with FIDE Grandmaster Nigel Short, who visited Honiara from 25–27 June as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen chess development across the country.

During his brief but impactful stay, Grandmaster Short held high level meetings with the Solomon Islands Chess Federation Executive, the National Sports Council (NSC), and the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI). Discussions centred on expanding youth and school chess programs, improving national development pathways, and exploring future collaboration with FIDE and the Oceania Chess Federation.
Despite a tight schedule, Grandmaster Short made time for an exciting late evening blitz session at White River Bridge on 26 June. He played a series of 5 minute games against eight local players from various clubs — including one female player — offering them rare exposure to world class competition.
Players and colours played:
- Fred R (Black)
- Chris K (White)
- Temenga A (Black)
- Kelly S (White)
- Magau T (Black)
- Susan T (White)
- Robert P (Black)
- Daran P (White)

Grandmaster Short won all matches and provided detailed feedback on openings, strategy, and game discipline — advice that players described as invaluable for their growth.
The Solomon Islands Chess Federation expressed sincere appreciation to Grandmaster Nigel Short and FIDE for their support, encouragement, and commitment to helping build a stronger chess culture in the country.
