Senior national swimmer Edgar Iro has highlighted the importance of the Solomon Islands Swimming Federation’s participation in the Launch Initiative Sports event organised by the Solomon Islands Career and Development Centre (SICDC) over the weekend at DC Park in East Honiara.
Speaking to RAW SPORTS, Iro said the event provided available opportunity to encourage children to become involved in sport while learning about the different sporting federations operating in the country.
“It is very important to bring children out to engage in sports and learn from the federations that are encouraging them to participate in sports in thefuture,” he said.
Iro said the initiative allowed children from surrounding communities to explore different sports and discover activities that interested them, particularly swimming.
“The event provided an opportunity for the children incommunities to come out and see the types of sports they are interested in, especially swimming,” he said.
The senior national swimmer said initiatives like the sports programme help spark children’s interest in sport from an early age while steering them away from negative influences in their communities.
“This kind of event will help motivate children to engage in sports. Our swimming team is very happy to be here taking part in the event, demonstrating the sport for these children,” he said.
“We are happy to be demonstrating swimming for these children so that they will look forward to joining the sport in the future.”
Iro also acknowledged the Solomon Islands Career and Development Centre (SICDC) for organising the event and creating a platform for the Swimming Federation to showcase the sport to young people.
He said the initiative would inspire more children to develop an interest in swimming and other sports, contributing to the growth of sport in the Solomon Islands.
